So when we learned about the emergence of new Eco-Domes just a little over a 1 hour and 30-minute drive from Cape Town, we simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to experience them firsthand.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Having been an enthusiastic Twitter user for some time now, I had the pleasure of connecting with Mike. We occasionally interacted online, and little did I know that he and his partner Sandy were embarking on an extraordinary project—a captivating retreat nestled on their picturesque farm. After years of dedicated work and countless adventures, Mike and Sandy made the bold decision to embrace a tranquil existence in the serene surroundings of Tesselaarsdal at their off-the-grid farm.

Nestled in the heart of the captivating Overberg region in the Western Cape province of South Africa lies the enchanting town of Tesselaarsdal. With its roots tracing back to the 1800s, when a freed slave named Johannes Tesselaar was granted the land by his former owner, this small town holds a significant historical legacy.
Tesselaarsdal lies in its breathtaking natural surroundings, adorned with rolling hills and a meandering river nearby. The town thrives on its rich cultural heritage, fostering a close-knit community that cherishes its traditions and takes immense pride in its shared history.

ECO-DOMES
On a delightful, sun-drenched day, we made our way from Cape Town to the farm and were instantly captivated by the breathtaking scenery that enveloped us. Rolling hills stretched as far as the eye could see, exuding a sense of tranquility that embraced us. Amidst this picturesque backdrop, we were delighted to discover the presence of thriving Pomegranate Orchards, a cherished element of the farm experience.
Warmly greeted by Mike and Sandy, and their furry four-legged companions with tails wagging, we immediately felt at home. Eager to unveil their latest venture, they wasted no time in introducing us to their pride and joy—the magnificent POM GRATZ Eco-Domes, their newest creation on the farm.
Pom-Gratz = A playful blend of two words ‘Pomegranate’ and ‘Congratz’. Just like the fruit that grows on the farm. This unique word combination symbolize the growth and abundance that comes with celebrating a new journey.
At POM GRATZ, you’ll discover three exquisite self-catering Eco-Domes: Serenity, Infinity, and Tranquility. Each dome has been thoughtfully furnished and adorned, showcasing a tasteful aesthetic while prioritizing eco-friendliness. These unique accommodations operate entirely off the grid, embracing sustainability.
The Eco-Domes offer a comfortable bedroom-dome space, featuring a cosy double bed dressed in luxurious 200-thread-count cotton linen. You’ll find some hanging space, as well as two swinging chairs that allow you to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring views (Note: Tranquility features a comfy couch). For your leisurely moments, there’s a selection of captivating books on the shelves, along with a table for your convenience. As a thoughtful touch, a welcome sherry awaits to warm you up on chilly winter days.
Adjacent to the bedroom-dome, the toilet and shower – waterless toilets and a gas-powered shower ensure sustainable practices without compromising on comfort. You’ll also find bathrobes, towels, and a range of bathroom amenities, including delightful handmade goat’s milk soaps enriched with natural oils from La Lain’s (locally made with LOVE).
The kitchen space is equipped with a fridge, gas stove, and a comprehensive selection of glassware, cutlery, and crockery. Pots and pans are at your disposal, along with coffee, tea, and sugar—everything you might need during your stay. As an added treat, fresh farm milk awaits you in the fridge, along with homemade rusks to savour with a soothing cup of tea.
