Accommodation Tried and Loved (Reviews)

Tierhoek Cottages, slow living at its best… / Robertson, South Africa.

2020 was a crazy and scary year that affected everyone’s lives in many ways. As we all still adjusting to the ‘new normal’, we would like to introduce you to our magnificent discovery.

Tierhoek Organic Farm and Cottages is located outside of Robertson in the Noree Valley, Western Cape, behind the Rooiberg Cellar. Their land have a total of 35ha in production, and 1660ha being wild mountain.

Tierhoek, apart from their organic produce, is known for its fantastically located cottages – the ultimate escape from busy city lives.

We were so lucky to be able to experience the magic that is Tierhoek, “an everyday sort of magic — the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places.”

Tierhoek cottages are private, romantic and self-catering nestled at the foot of the majestic Langeberg Mountains. Less than 2 hours drive from Cape Town and you will find yourself amidst beautiful surroundings, peace and tranquility personified.

“Going to the mountains is like going home.”

John Muir

You can choose from 5 spectacular appointed cottages, suitable for a couple’s stay or family getaways.

Each cottage is fully equipped and elegantly decorated with a private pool, wide verandahs, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and absolutely breathtaking views:

Arriving at Tierhoek, immediately uplifted us, as we drove towards the mountains and away from the busy hustle and bustle; we felt soothed and instinctively knew that Tierhoek will be good for the soul.

OUR COTTAGE

We stayed at the blissful little Stone Cottage set just above the Spaarkloof dam, overlooking the farm and the incredible mountains.

We absolutely loved that our cottage was surrounded by fynbos, home to a variety of interesting birds and wildlife.

The cottage was spacious and super cosy. Open plan kitchen (fully equipped) and lounge area leading into the protected stoep with two lounge chairs, plunge pool and braai area. The bedroom is fitted with a king size bed, cupboard space and en-suite bathroom with basin, and bath. Our favorite spot was the outdoor shower.  Have you ever showered under the starry skies? Well, if you haven’t, you have to add that to your bucket list.

STOEPING

We spend a lot of time “Stoeping”. Breakfast and dinners with this view were simply magical. So is soaking in the sun, reading, enjoying the surrounding nature, bird watching and splashing in the plunge pool.  This is all you need.

We happened to spot a family of baboons in the distance and enjoyed watching their antics.

Tierhoek is the ultimate tonic for nature lovers.

“Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

EXPLORING THE FARM

Robertson Valley offers visitors so much to see & do and everything is highly recommended. However if you staying at Tierhoek you will be able to enjoy:

  • Walking and hiking – There are various paths you can use to hike up into the mountains or walk around the farm. Area Maps are available in each cottage. We ventured out for a hike to the Waterfall and loved it.
  • Mountain Biking – if you have bicycles bring them with, so you can ride around the farm, though there are no designated cycle routes.
  • Bird and animal watching – a bird lover’s delight; bring your binoculars and cameras. You will enjoy seeing sunbirds, many farm animals like cows, sheep, donkeys (the cutest!) and wildlife like baboons, tortoises, bucks and more.

We have done numerous walks around the farm and had the opportunity to view all the accommodation on offer at Tierhoek, before the next arrivals. Let me tell you all the cottages are gorgeous.

HIKE TO THE WATERFALL

On the first day, after our arrival, we packed some food and beverages and were off to explore the waterfall. It is a short hike alongside and in the dry river bed to the small but very refreshing waterfall (of course the waterfall size depends on the amount of rainfall received).  So do go, regardless of a bigger or smaller waterfall experience, it will still be magical.

The views are breathtaking and cooling down in the water very rewarding.

We spend hours there, enjoying our picnic, getting lost in the sounds of nature and soothing our souls by the gentle falling waterfall. We only returned in the afternoon. What a great day!

TIERHOEK ORGANIC PRODUCTS

Each cottage at Tierhoek has some Tierhoek Organic produce on offer, from delicious preserves, fresh fruit jams to delectable dried fruits. They grow it, make it, pack it and truly love what they do!

We purchased jars of apricot jams and you can taste the love. #SupportLocal
