Accommodation Tried and Loved (Reviews)

Africamps at Pat Busch Reserve – The PERFECT escape | Robertson, South Africa

Many of us had to cancel travel plans or put it on hold, due to the obvious; lockdown in South Africa. All of us have been craving a change of scenery and that getaway from home.

Finally the lockdown restrictions have been lifted and we can travel again. The borders are open, to welcome international visitors to South Africa. So it is time to give a shout-out to Africamps at Pat Bush Reserve. What an awesome experience.

We had the opportunity, prior to lockdown, to visit the famous Africamps in the magnificent Pat Busch Reserve for the first time. Let me tell you the accommodation and location deserves all the buzz and hype. It should be on your bucket list to visit, in fact do, that as soon as possible.

INTRODUCTION

AfriCamps at Pat Busch is situated in the breathtaking Pat Busch Mountain Reserve just outside Robertson.

“2000 Hectares of spectacular mountain fynbos with streams, mountain dams, birdlife and various animals such as bucks, fallow deer, Nguni cows and even a very shy leopard. The reserve is also home to a rare Protea Flower that was thought extinct for almost 50 years and is now under protection of Cape Nature.” (* source)

We arrived on a cloudy and rainy day, yet received the warmest welcome from the owners & managers at Pat Busch, husband and wife team, Stephan & Lindi Busch. We already felt like, we’ve arrived home.

You can check in at their reception/on-site farm shop located after you entered the reserve gate. It is convenient, as you can also get your last minute supplies there. It all comes in rather handy and will save you a trip, if you perhaps forgot to pack something. The shop also offers all natural produce and interesting goods from the Robertson Valley area.

LOCATION

The reserve is located in an amazing spot. It is hidden, unspoiled and peaceful.  You are surrounded by mountains and those endless views – it is like heaven on earth. If you love peace and tranquility, you have arrived. What bliss!

BOUTIQUE CAMPING

All the facilities and amenities were explained upon check in. We were given a little map with a route to our tent.

Slowly, lingering, not rushing at all we took a drive on the dirt road towards our home for the night; keeping in mind the free roaming residents on the premises including tortoises, owls, rabbits, deer and many more. How incredible!

There are three accommodation options at Pat Busch: “Standard Accommodation – and affordable and how they like to say “down to earth” cottages and farmhouse, perfect for couples, families and even single travellers wanting to get away from it all; Exclusive Accommodation – that offers plenty of privacy and tranquillity. Surrounded by incredible vineyards and Boutique Glamping – specially designed “glamping” tents with everything what you possibly might need for the comfort of your stay.” (* source)

We stayed in the “glamping” tent and absolutely loved it. The first impression when we parked in front of our tent was how large they are, however at the same time, blending into the surroundings, hidden between trees, bushes and cactus plants – giving you as much privacy as possible.

OUR TENT AND GLAMPING EXPERIENCE

The tent we stayed in had a large patio/balcony overlooking the mountains. Open plan dining area and kitchen with all the amenities one would need, including a fireplace for those cold evenings. There are separate bedroom sections; one with double bed and another with a single bunker beds. They share a bathroom with walk in shower, toilet and a basin. All very spacious and well appointed.

Remember this is where you, “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.”

SOUROUNDINGS

After unpacking (which we’ve done in a hurry, places to go), we decided not to waste a minute longer and were off to explore the grounds.

The reserve boasts spectacular views wherever you are. The sounds of nature and animals simply add to the experience. We walked around this beautiful fynbos valley, savoring nature’s offerings.

There is an alluring saltwater pool area for those loving a bit of a leisure time and a swim on a hot summer’s day. Several hiking trails are available for a self-guided/guided experience, swimming and fishing in their mountain dams, as well as mountain bike rental for those adrenaline junkies. Bird watching is a must, 150 different species!  In fact both fauna and flora are in abundance, a nature lover’s dream.

The kids can enjoy the well equipped playground that includes swings and slides.

What we loved about this place is the fact that it is so lush green, possess a great ambience and is well looked after. You can feel the love and passion here.

BRAAI TIME

After we explored for hours, we decided to chill on our balcony with a glass of wine and a braai. Surely this is the best way to end the day and nourish the soul.

We didn’t mind the weather at all and enjoyed every minute soaking in the views around us. After all it is said nature wears the colors of the spirit.

BREAKFAST WITH THE VIEW

Africamps are self-catering, however Pat Busch Reserve offers an additional option of breakfast or dinner in a basket that can be delivered to your tent.

We absolutely loved the “Cook your Own” breakfast option. The delectable basket was delivered in the morning complete with fresh yogurt, bread, fruit, cheese, butter, jam, bacon and eggs. All ready for you to cook your own breakfast and enjoy it with that incredible view, indeed the perfect balance.

CONCLUSION

We already decided to return to this place of enrichment and reflection, simply put, home. Only this time, it will be for longer.
