Montagu is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, about 180 kilometres from Cape Town in the Western Little Karoo. This historic town is on the famous Route 62 halfway between Cape Town and the Garden Route. It offers visitors beautiful mountain views, clear air, a perfect climate and lots of activities to suit all tastes and ages.
We haven’t explored that side much, so you can imagine the excitement when we were finally able to travel to Montagu and experience the beautiful 360on62 Farm Cottages.
360on62 Farm Cottages are ideally located and surrounded by 360° mountain views. A peaceful, thoughtful Little Karoo sanctuary where your soul can breathe, exist and evolve. On offer 5 self-catering, fully equipped farm cottages – each with a panoramic view.
OUR COTTAGE
Our choice for the stay was the winsome PALE CHANTING cottage.
We arrived on a very hot day and were welcomed by the Owner Brendan (and Jasper the friendly Great Dane) who explained all the facilities and offerings. Our welcome gift of homemade Karoo Style bread waiting in our cottage along with the welcome sherry was a unique touch.
Pale Chanting is neighbouring with Fish Eagle cottage on the other side. The cottages are set up in a way to maintain their privacy, so perfect for visitors travelling together. All cottages are compact as they are converted labourer cottages, which makes them cosy and comfortable.
As it was a very hot day with scorching temperatures reaching 33 degrees and beyond – the cottage was a cool and welcome retreat.
Pale Chanting comfortably sleeps two people. The kitchen has a huge fireplace and is well-equipped with everything you might need during your stay. We loved the vintage additions like the in perfect condition working manual coffee grinder. Great start to the day grinding and enjoying your coffee amidst the morning birdsong and magnificent views. As it is said “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”, let me tell you these views can do exactly that.
The bathroom has a shower, toilet, towels and basic amenities are provided.
The outdoor patio (our favourite) has a braai, comfortable seating, loungers, an outdoor wood-fired hot tub and a bathtub. Oh and let’s not forget the dreamy swing – loooooved it!
There are no TVs but who needs one in these breathtaking surroundings, mother nature showing off her finest. What better nourishment for the soul.
ACTIVITIES
There is so much to do on the farm.
On a hot day, one can enjoy a refreshing swim in their pool with magnificent views. Chill at the pool Lapa “and allow the magic of the mountains to do the rest.”* This is the perfect place to experience the magic of the Karoo sunsets! It is an attack on your senses, the smell of the earth and the sound of owls and jackals as they greet the night.
Sip on a drink from their Khaya Karoo pizza oven & bar – their “pizza bar” has an honesty bar with an ice machine and limited selection od wines, spirits and cool drinks to fix your own drink. There is also a pizza oven that guests are welcome to use; a “gas stove & oven and a wood-fired oven that guests can use for baking and roasting.”* Very cool addition!
A short walk from the cottages is a farm dam. A kayak and stand up paddleboard (SUP) are available, or take a dip in the cool waters and enjoy the Lapa and braai pit at the dam. There is also a “Bath at the dam – wood-fired hot-tub alongside the dam which is available to all guests on a first-come, first-served basis (there is a “hot tub in use” sign up the pathway to ensure privacy).”* Genius!
WALKING TRAILS
As nature lovers, we had to explore the farm. 360on62 offers a 5 km route for trail runners and cyclists, and a 2 km walking trail. The views are spectacular and we do recommend enjoying the trails as an early morning activity.
Birdlife is in abundance and a photographer’s dream, no matter the time of the day.
