We are always in search of unique experiences around South Africa and the Western Cape and the recent visit to the African Game Lodge was one of those memorable stays that need to be documented.
The lodge is located around 45 min outside of Montagu (a very well-looked-after dirt road accessible by any car) towards Ourberg/Touwsriver. It is the most spectacular and unique route to your destination – African Game Lodge. We did doubt where we are going at some point but AGL signs every couple of kilometers were very re-assuring 🙂 So we drove enjoying the scenery and finally reach the gates of the reserve. I have said it before – totally worth the drive.
We spend there three beautiful nights and would like to share our top reasons why we think you should pick this escape for your next getaway.
NO 1: LOCATION
The location is amazing. If you love nature and remote places – this will be the perfect choice for your escape. No matter if you travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, it will be a great experience for all. Beautiful views, nature that surrounds you from every angle, and peacefulness that is needed to unwind and relax.

NO 2: ACCOMMODATION
One would say that African Game Lodge is so “far away” from everything, however the accommodation offered for their guests it is Despite the fact that the lodge is located far away the chalets are clean Various accommodation options. From secluded luxury tents to spacious chalets, catering for large families to couples.
The chalet we stayed at is equipped with everything you might need. The living space is spacious and comfortable. Extra points for cleanless!
NO 3: FOOD
Although guests are able to cater for themselves on self-cateing basis, African Game Lodge also offers meals. Guest are welcome to enjoy breakfasts, lunches or dinners at their restaurant on pre-booking.
Their chef is fantastic and food delicious. Chicken Curry and Chicken Wings are a must to try!
NO 4: “off-the-grid”
African Game Lodge offers the “off-the-grid” experience, with solar powered accommodation. There is no cell reception in the reserve and no wi-fi in the units. However the communal lounge is equipped with Wi-Fi and satellite TV, for those who want to stay in touch with the world and the loved ones.
NO 5: ACTIVITIES / FACILITIES
There are various activities tha t guest can enjoy at the reserve:
- Game Drives (please pre-book)
- Hiking & bike trails
- Game room with pool table and tennis table
- Board Games avilable at the main lounge
- Putt-Putt
- Birding
- exploring the award-winning town of Montagu
- and/or simply an activity relaxing by the pool or in your unit/chalet or tent
NO 6: SUNRISES AND SUNSETS
If you love chasing sunrises and sunsets and enjoying them in epic location – this place guarantees a memorable experience.
NO 7: IT IS ALSO A GREAT VENUE
African Game Lodge is also a great venue – so if you are searching for a place to host a conference, team building event, intimate wedding or birthday. Check them out!
